UN Lifts Penalties on Syria's Leader Prior to White House Visit
Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip next week.
Sharaa was named interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that drove out the former president in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of domestic strife.
The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" since Assad was deposed.
He had been subject to global penalties as the leader of the religious organization HTS, once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of foreign terror groups this past July.
More Penalties Removed
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.
Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and allied countries for backing the country and its population."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.
The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.
Following that encounter, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit does not represent the president's debut journey to the US this year. This past fall, he made history as the first Syrian leader to speak before the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.
Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
