Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Despite Emphatic Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the England team did not enjoy more backing from the home fans during their decisive triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his squad showcase their good form, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the initial stages effectively ending the contest. But, he was unhappy with the energy at the national stadium.
“With one and a half sessions to get ready against a drilled team and we did very well,” the coach commented. “It could have been five goals ahead at the break. We missed the additional ones. The stadium was silent. There was no support from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the team deserved more support today.”
“I stand by this statement. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I hoped for a greater backing in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to get behind us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Display
Away from risking a fight with supporters, the manager also created controversy by leaving out Bellingham and Foden from his squad. However the move was backed up by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and getting his first international goal.
“He plays his game,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his spot.”
Bellamy Hopes for Lessons from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a key qualifying match on Monday, learn from their poor first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this game,” Bellamy commented. “I wanted to assess our current level. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance fills me with drive.”
Injury Concern for Watkins
Watkins was substituted at the break after colliding with a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a qualifier on next week.
