{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car
The dangerous situation occurred on the third circuit when track officials were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Official Investigation Underway
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority
"On lap three, marshals were notified and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy officials were canceled and a caution signal was displayed in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what happened following that moment"
